Exploring Urquhart Castle on the Shores of Loch Ness
Urquhart Castle, sitting on the banks of Loch Ness in Drumnadrochit, is a place where history and legend collide. A fortress with a storied past, it played a key role in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, changing hands numerous times as the Grant Clan and the MacDonalds fought for control. In 1692, it was partially destroyed to prevent it from falling into enemy hands—leaving behind the striking ruins we see today.
Louise and I took our time wandering through the remnants of the castle, imagining what life must have been like within its walls. With every step, the sheer depth of history surrounding us became more tangible. There’s something special about standing in the shadow of crumbling stone towers, knowing they’ve withstood centuries of conflict and change.
Of course, there’s also the undeniable thrill of gazing out over Loch Ness itself. The water stretched endlessly before us, dark and mysterious, with an eerie beauty that made it easy to see why the legend of Nessie endures. Whether or not you believe in the Loch Ness Monster, the loch has an undeniable presence—one that makes you pause and take it all in.
This was a stop I won’t soon forget. The mix of history, legend, and breathtaking scenery made Urquhart Castle an unforgettable experience. If you’re ever in the Scottish Highlands, make sure to spend some time exploring these ruins. They might just leave you as awestruck as they did us.
