Bruny Island Cheese & Wine: A Must-Visit in Tasmania
Our final highlight moment in Tasmania was a divine cheese and wine platter at the Bruny Island Cheese Company—a place that truly embodies the island’s rustic charm and dedication to artisanal craftsmanship. Nestled on Bruny Island, this small but famous cheese company is known for its handcrafted, traditional cheeses, made using locally sourced milk and natural fermentation methods. Paired with a glass of Tasmanian wine, it was the perfect way to soak in the island’s serene beauty and savor some of the finest flavors in the region.
The experience was made even more special by sharing it with Louise. There’s something undeniably delightful about spending time together over cheese and wine, especially in such a peaceful setting. We sampled a selection of rich, aged cheeses, including their renowned Saint, a soft, washed-rind cheese that’s incredibly creamy and full of character. Accompanied by freshly baked bread and a bottle of local Pinot Noir, it was a moment of pure indulgence—a taste of Tasmania at its finest.
No trip to Bruny Island is complete without a visit to The Neck, a breathtaking natural isthmus just a few kilometers from the cheese company. The narrow stretch of land separates North and South Bruny, with stunning panoramic views from the top of the lookout. Climbing the wooden stairs to the summit, we were rewarded with a sweeping 360-degree view of the island’s untouched beauty—golden sands, deep blue waters, and rolling green hills stretching as far as the eye could see.
Getting to Bruny Island is an adventure in itself. A short 40-minute drive from Hobart CBD brings you to the Kettering ferry terminal, where a quick ferry ride transports you to this Tasmanian gem. Whether it’s for the cheese, the wine, the landscapes, or the wildlife, Bruny Island is a place that leaves an impression—and one we are already eager to revisit.
Louise and I will surely miss this place, but we know we’ll be back. Until then, we’ll be reminiscing about lazy afternoons with cheese, wine, and breathtaking views—a perfect end to our Tasmanian adventure. If you’re planning a trip to Tasmania, make sure Bruny Island is on your list—you won’t regret it!
