Bicheno, Tasmania: Penguins, Coastline & Seaside Charm
Bicheno, a charming coastal town on Tasmania’s east coast, welcomed us with its stunning landscapes, wildlife encounters, and a peaceful seaside atmosphere. Nestled between rugged coastlines and clear blue waters, it’s a place where nature truly takes center stage.
One of the most unforgettable experiences was watching the Fairy Penguins return home at dusk. As the sun set, these tiny creatures emerged from the ocean, waddling up the beach to their burrows. It was magical to see them navigate the shore, undisturbed by anything but the gentle sound of the waves.
The coastline itself offered plenty to take in. At one point, we came across a massive number of leatherjacket fish washed up on the rocks and sand, providing an unexpected feast for the ever-opportunistic seagulls.
Another highlight was simply watching the fishing boats dot the waters around Bicheno. One, in particular, the Waubs Bay Bicheno, stood out against the golden hues of the late afternoon light. There’s something incredibly peaceful about seeing these vessels coming and going, carrying the town’s rich maritime history with them.
We also took some time to capture a few photos—not too many, just enough to remember the moment. Shots of the coastline, the waves crashing against the rocks, and a few of each other sitting in what looked like an abandoned tinny boat, adding a bit of fun to the day. It was one of those unplanned moments that made the trip with Louise all the more enjoyable.
Bicheno is more than just a stop along the east coast—it’s a place to slow down, take in the beauty of Tasmania, and witness some of its most fascinating wildlife up close.
