Camping in Ulladulla

Family Camping Adventure in Ulladulla NSW – Beaches, BBQs and Memories

Our family recently joined a group camping trip to Ulladulla, a great chance to explore more of the stunning south coast of New South Wales. While I enjoy camping and often wish we did it more regularly, the thought of squeezing everything into our Toyota Camry usually makes me hesitate.

Despite that, we packed the car and set off. The trip was especially meaningful as our close friends Matt and Holly Benstead were also bringing their family along. After a few hours of driving and one missed turn (due to unclear directions involving a certain landmark and a missing detail about turning left) we arrived.

Hayden's First Time Camping

This was Hayden's first camping trip. He may not have fully understood what was going on, but it was adorable watching him try to help us set up the tent. Meanwhile, Nevan and Liam raced off to find their friends in the park, avoiding any of the work involved in setting up.

Establishing New Traditions

Among the typical camping activities, there were a few highlights that stood out for me. These were simple things, but meaningful enough that I would love to make them part of future trips.

Early Mornings at the Beach

Each morning, the boys joined me between five and six o'clock to head down to the beach. One morning we tried fishing, the next we explored the rock pools and climbed along the rocks. These early hours, when the air is still cool and the world feels quiet, were easily the best part of the day. I am proud of the boys for getting up and joining me. I wish I had taken more photos, but I was too cautious about sand getting into the camera.

No Video Games Allowed

This rule was simple. While the boys were allowed to bring their Nintendo DS for the drive, they were packed away once we arrived. Without screens, they quickly found joy in simple things, walking through the bush, playing footy, and climbing trees. I am sure they had a better time because of it.

Taking Ownership of the Fire

Campfires are always a favourite part of any trip, so the boys were given a job. While I took care of lighting it, they were in charge of gathering wood and deciding when to add more to the fire. This small responsibility made them feel included and excited, and I didn't hear a single complaint when it came time to collect more firewood.

A Day of Outdoor Activities

One of the best parts of the trip was spending a day at a nearby resort that offered activities like canoeing, paddle boating, and tennis. The older boys and I set out on the lake and paddled over to a landform that looked like an island. It turned out not to be one, but the kids were convinced, and that made the adventure even more fun.

Looking Ahead to More Adventures

Although I managed to take a few photos, I do regret not capturing more of the experience. That will certainly change on the next trip. All in all, it was a wonderful weekend shared with good friends. I am already looking forward to planning the next one.
