I’m not a munchkin…
by Mike250 on September 8th, 2007 in Funny, Friends

…Julia and Claudia are. Julia maintained her amazing ability to win games and Claudia joined in by helping Julia to win which ensured she also won. At least that’s what I think happened. You see, we were playing the very catchy card game Munchkin. Markus had been telling us for a while now that he knew a card game that was very fun that would be great to play as a group. It even had expansion packs so he took it upon himself to order the game from eBay and get us hooked up. The best way to describe Munchkin is to use the game creators own words.

Go down in the dungeon. Kill everything you meet. Backstab your friends and steal their stuff. Grab the treasure and run.

Admit it. You love it.

This award-winning card game, designed by Steve Jackson, captures the essence of the dungeon experience . . . with none of that stupid roleplaying stuff. You and your friends compete to kill monsters and grab magic items. And what magic items! Don the Horny Helmet and the Boots of Butt-Kicking. Wield the Staff of Napalm . . . or maybe the Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment. Start by slaughtering the Potted Plant and the Drooling Slime, and work your way up to the Plutonium Dragon . . .

See there were no dweebs telling me that their Sword of Divine Aura with +50 Agility was better than my Staff of Reckoning that had an enchant to cause additional spell damage while healing me at a rate of +5 every three seconds. None of that crap.

So this past Saturday night we played from 10pm until the wee hours of the morning until it was decided that Julia was the best Munchkin by reaching Level 10 first. You get levels by killing monsters, selling stuff or drawing rare cards that level you up. You kill monsters by having more power than the monster. You get power by having “items” with power and leveling up. If you are level 5 with a sword that has 3 power you essentially have 8 power. You can then beat any monster lower than 8. But sometimes you have spell cards that can be used once to give you bonus power for that round. You can also enlist in the help of another player by offering them part of the reward or flat out bribing them. Other players can also help the monster to ensure that you cannot beat it. You could always roll the dice and hope for a 5 or 6 which means that you safely run away from it. But that’s moot if another player has a card that can overrule the number on the dice you roll. Yeah pretty sucky, but awesomely funny game. I highly recommend it.

Sounds interesting, but the in-laws just went and bought my son a Pokemon deck so I’m not sure I should be buying any more card games (unless it’s a deck of my own so the two of us can game). Then again, I bought WoW:The Board Game for Christmas and we only played it once, but we tied up the dining room table for three days while playing it :D

Hey hey! My Gravatar Icon showed up!

I bought a Pokemon Deck of my own last night. The little guy and I have already “dueled” twice so far with our premade decks. But the premade decks seem to have too many Pokemon cards and not enough energy cards, and the rule about only being able to play 1 energy card per turn really slows down gameplay when your Pokemon needs 3 Energy Cards to use a Pokepower, so you basically can only attack once every three turns, but at least you nail your opponent’s Pokemon for 60 damage plus hit one of his benched Pokemon for 40, but it takes forever to knock out even just one Pokemon and your opponent has 5 Pokemon on the bench and several in his hand just waiting to come out and…er…uh oh. That sounds like hardcore Pokefan talk. Oh dear.

How was WOW? I keep seeing advertisements and wonder if I should spend the $$$. Seeing you played it only once worries me though…

Yay for Gravatars! Bout time too; you look so much better. Oh dear Pokemeon Speak - You lost me at hello.

WoW:The Board Game needs a lot of room. It pretty much took up our entire dining room table, and we don’t have a small table, either. if you have a dedicated games room or a large dining room table, you’d probably be ok, but given that there are frequently many models on the game board at all times, it’s not really a game you can easily pack up “to be continued…” at a later date.

I read the Rule Book several times, then condensed them and summarized them to make them easier to follow, but it still took a while to get the hang of things. If you’ve got a few dedicated gamers willing to learn a new game, be prepared to spend an entire afternoon or evening getting the hang of it. Admittedly I was playing both my son’s and my own toons (2 each) but then it was our first game.

Part of the deterrant to breaking it out again is how long it took to finish, but I’d guess if you started playing after lunch with 4 reasonably intelligent adults (3 plus you), that you can probably complete the game by the end of the day. It’s not really a game for the kiddies because they’re bound to lose interest after the first hour or three :D
