The water isn’t cold
by Mike250 on September 5th, 2007 in Family
Well it is, but it’s not too cold that you can’t swim in it. Spring started 6 days ago in Australia and with that comes our building excitement of experiencing our first summer since, well… June 2006! As we re-located to Australia prior to the start of the American summer of 2007 we were the lucky ones to face two winters in a year. Lucky us. The boys invited their little mate from across the street and to the beach we went. This beach is actually really cool because it has this shelf that causes the shallow part to extend for quite a distance. You have to wade quite a way out before it starts getting deeper. Liam has a fear of water (he nearly drowned a couple years ago) so this gives him the opportunity to creep a little further from the shore than he is used to. Nevan isn’t confident in the water either so it was good to see him brave the chest high waters with waves crashing on him. I was nearby in case anything went wrong but I was pretty sure the peer pressure of having a friend with him would take care of any wimpy behaviour. It was good fun. The boys start their official swim school tomorrow. I think it’s almost a general rule: you may call yourself Aussie parents as soon as you enroll your kids with a swim instructor. I love swimming at the beach, pity Los Angeles beaches aren’t conducive to having a good time, at least not in the water.
Quite some time ago me and a mate drove up to Maroochydore with my sister & her BF. The mate’s family had a cane farm up that way. This was the middle of winter (we had a couple of weeks off from Uni) and we were swimming in the river that ran through his farm, we went swimming at the beach, it was awesome. Had the place almost to ourselves. We visited one of the mate’s cousins one time and asked if he wanted to come to the beach. He answered the door wearing jeans and a woolly jumper, said “It’s the middle of winter; you Victorians are crazy.” “Is that a no?” we said. He answered by closing the door in our faces. We hit the beach and had a blast

Yeah but LA beaches are famous for other reasons - they’re just cool places to hangout.
Funny story! So you’re a Victorian? I didn’t know that. I am as well though I really am a Queenslander in every other way (except sport, where I follow NSW, weird).
Having lived in Colorado nearly 5 years I feel like I can handle either extreme. This week while in cricket practice everyone was complaining that it was cold. It was probably 19 degrees. I was loving it.
